Weed Wizard Puts Spell on Bass

    Author: Brad Wiegmann |

Not everyone can use a broom like my fishing buddy Harry.  He can jerk them out of the thickest cover any bass lives in.  It’s like he puts a spell on them, a real wizard at catching bass.  “Blimey, Harry how do you catch more bass than me?” I asked him.  “It’s my Weed Wizard; it really puts a spell on them!” replied Harry.  “I do not care if it’s supernatural or not, just give me one!” I pleaded, only because I was desperate to catch a bass and my lures kept getting hung up.  Magic or not, my fishing buddy H. Potter can sure put a hex on them bass.

Is that how your fishing trips go?  Some days you just stay hung up all day and get little fishing done.  When faced with this dilemma most anglers just give up; however, Pete Marshall, owner of Weed Wizard went to the drawing board and designed the Weed Wizard.  You see, Marshall had the same problem all anglers have when fishing a tube bait with an exposed hook; he was constantly getting hung up.  “I needed a guard to keep it from getting snagged and would collapse to set the hook,” explained Marshall.  The proto Weed Wizard was made with mylar but it turned out not exactly what Marshall wanted.  “Instead, I decided on 10-gauge Banjo wire and a ABS formed weed guard,” he continued, “the weed guard or brush snag eliminators are hard to see and the ABS piece can be painted to match any color tube.”  The Weed Wizard consists of a brush snag eliminator and custom poured jig head. However, not just any jig head works with the brush snag eliminator.  “Because the jig head is so unique, only my jig heads will work with it,” Marshall pointed out.  “Every Weed Wizard jig head is made with a 60-degree 3/0 Gamakatsu hook and is available in 1/8-ounce, 1/4-ounce, or 3/8-ounce,” said Marshall.  Similar to other inventors, Marshall pours, cuts, shapes, glues, and packages every Weed Wizard himself in his garage.  Unlike some other terminal tackle, every Weed Wizard has to be hand made.

The Weed Wizard works by inserting the jig head into a tube, pushing the eye out, and attaching the brush snag eliminator to the jig eye.  Marshall also gave these tips when using the Weed Wizard, “Anglers should compress the tube in order to apply the Wizard; it's also the best way to remove it when needed,” he continued, “the reason for this is to protect the notches that locks it to the jig; most anglers would just turn it for removal without compressing the tube and that will damage the notches”.  “Another thing, when inserting the jig into the tube, anglers should keep the jig head eyelet 1/4-inch back from the nose of the tube, this gives the tube a little bit of elastic spring for bumping into structure,” added Marshall.  For complete details or video see www.marzier.com.  When fishing the Weed Wizard, Marshall prefers to use the 3/8-ounce or 1/4-ounce jig that fall straight down in heavy cover and the 1/8-ounce which spirals when it falls in open water situations.

Finally, I will not be getting hung up constantly when fishing a tube bait.  This will definitely increase my catch ratio.  Crikey Harry, now even I can put a spell on them bass!
