It’s truly amazing the technology in the small marine color fishfinder/ Chartplotter that are being manufactured. The new Lowrance Elite 4 DSI is one of them with a LED backlit 3.5-inch color display. It’s size makes them perfect for kayak anglers or to be mounted up on the front deck.
The Lowrance Elite 4 DSI (www.lowrance.com) comes with a special DSI transducer and selecting the right location for the transducer is critical for performance. The best location will be where water can easily move past the transducer when the boat is in motion. Turbulence in front of the transducer that creates bubbles will diminish the performance.
A good location for a transducer will be below the water line when the boat is up on plane. Keeping the transducer below the water line will ensure that the unit will not lose the bottom signal when the boat is moving forward and up on plane. The transducer should also be installed at least 1-inch away from the boat’s outboard engine lower unit.
Lowrance utilizes a ratchet system to align the transducer parallel to the ground. When attaching the transducer:
There are several options when it comes to where you can mount the Lowrance Elite 4 DSI transducer including thru the hull, on the transom or trolling motor.
Shooting thru the hull is the least preferred method of mounting the Lowrance Elite 4 DSI transducer. That’s due to the loss of signal as the transducer has to echo through the fiberglass, however, the advantage is never a broken transducer because it’s epoxied into the hull.
Mounting to the transom is simply and easy. Just hold the bracket assembly against the boat hull in a good location and mark where to drill the holes. Drill the holes with a #29 bit and attach the transducer bracket with the screws supplied to the hull. The Lowrance Elite 4 DSI transducer can be attached by following the transducer bracket assembly as shown in the installation manual.
Mounting on the trolling motor can be done by using the optional DSI trolling motor accessory (pn: 000-10261-001). The optional comes with specialized housing for the Lowrance Elite 4 DSI transducer allowing it to set inside the housing and be attached with a zip tie or hose clamp through slots on the side. Once inside with the housing place it overtop the trolling motor and tighten down making sure the unit is pointing downward parallel to the ground when deployed.
Installing the wiring of the Lowrance Elite 4 DSI can be done quickly. It comes with a transducer/power cable that splits into two cables. One cable attaches to the DSI transducer while the other to the battery. A special DSI filter cable that comes with the Lowrance Elite 4 DSI has to be installed before attaching the unit to the battery along with a 3 AMP fuse that’s not included.
Lowrance Elite 4 DSI comes with a special tilt and swivel mounting bracket. It can be installed with on any flat surface of the boat with the four screws supplied.
Kayak anglers can mount the unit using specially designed RAM Mounting parts.
