What Color Lure Do You Use?

    Author: Brad Wiegmann |

What color soft baits do you prefer?  Everyone has his or her own favorite colors.  Anglers traveling to different lakes to fish always want to know one thing; what color are the fish biting on?

Anglers are bombarded with elaborate varieties of colors available.  In addition, colors of plastic baits tend to vary slightly from each Lure Company.  Companies also make colors for certain regions.  Examples of this is Texas Red Shad or Tomato Red for Texas lake Sam Rayburn, Royal Shad for Alabama’s Lake Guntersville, and Erie Green Gold Flake for Lake Erie.

If anglers were to bring all these color patterns of lures in the boat, it would sink.  So are there any rules for what color pattern to fish?  None, but most anglers’ selected transparent or subtle colors in clear water or on sunny days.  On cloudy days or stain water, a more solid color pattern is preferred.  Cotton Candy and Watermelon are examples of productive transparent patterns.  Compare this to Junebug or Black Neon, which are successful solid color patterns.

So what plastic lure colors will survivor your tribal council?  This decision is hard to make.  I usually carry a variety of color patterns with me, so I can fish in any water clarity or sunny or cloudy day.  However, if I had to decide on only two colors for myself it would be Junebug for stained water and Green Pumpkin for clear water.  Now you only have to decide on what style lure to use.
