4 Tips for Pre-Spawn/Spawning Bass on Beaver Lake
This happen just last week after the cold front move through and it relocated some of the bass back towards deeper water.
Pre-Spawning Bass on Beaver Lake
Adjusting to “cold fronts” on Beaver Lake…dropping shallow water temps and blue bird skies do not mean the fish are not going to bite, only that the bass may have moved back towards deeper water. On Beaver Lake, the two key areas to fish during that time is bluff ends near spawning coves and lay downs on forty-five degree banks. I like to cast medium diving crankbaits on the bluff ends and flip crawfish shaped soft plastic baits around the lay downs.
How cold is too cold? The water temperature is in the lower fifties but I am fishing in the back of pockets catching bass that are actively feeding on shad. The key to catching these bass is not slow moving baits but fast. Lipless crankbaits or jerkbaits worked back quickly seem to trigger strikes. Also, the coves must have shad in the pocket for this technique to produce.
Prime time for spawning bass
It’s prime time for sight fishermen eyeing spawning bass on Beaver Lake. A initial wave of bass moved up to the spawning areas this past week and more are sure to follow with the increase in water temperatures this coming week. The lake level has been staying at a consistent level but will surely rise with the abundant rainfall that saturated the area this past week. The water clarity is stained in both the War Eagle and White River Arms, so the majority of sight fishermen are focusing their efforts from Prairie Creek to the Dam area. What’s bonus to fishing in this area? The majority of smallmouth live in this part of the lake.
Key locations to fish spawning bass on Beaver Lake is pea gravel banks that has wood/lay downs in shallow water. As for lures, nothing can beat a shaky head. I like a BOOYAH 1/8-ounce round ball head jig with 6-inch YUM Houdini Worm in green pumpkin/purple flake. Another option is casting a non-weighted YUM Dinger in the sweet spot of the bed.
After being pursued spawning bass on Beaver Lake will get extremely spooky when anglers approach them. One technique that works on these spooky bass is blind casting to target where bass should be spawning. Also, do not over look the walk ways of boat docks. Numerous bass will spawn under or around them on Beaver Lake.
