Break Away the Secret to Successful Buzzbait Fishing

    Author: Brad Wiegmann |

Don Minkler holding a bass caught on the E-Z Dip Lures Break Away BuzzbaitHow many times has this happened to you? You are on your local lake and the bass are slamming buzzbaits retrieved back bumping any piece of wood; however, you can’t get one hook-up. The bass are just flashing at your buzzbait like they are trying to kill it, but not eat it. It’s really frustrating and you only have so much patience before throwing your rod down on the deck of the boat and reaching for another rod with a different lure. You tried adding a trailer hook without any luck; you even tried a different buzzbait with an extended long wire arm shaft, but that isn’t even hooking them. There is no reason you cannot catch one except the blade of the buzzbait seems to be obstructing the bass from getting the hook in its mouth. Here’s a secret to catching more fish on buzzbaits when this happens, try using a Break Away Buzzbait by E-Z Dip Lures. The Break Away Buzzbait has a 360-degree collapsible buzzbait wire arm connected to the main wire frame that moves out of the way when a bass strikes.

A buzzbait’s popularity comes from its ability to cover lots of water quickly and drawing strikes from aggressE-Z Dip Lures Break Away Buzzbait with the arm upive bass. It’s a no brainer lure that only requires the angler to cast towards cover and bump or reel the buzzbait back through it. Buzzbaits rarely get hung up when retrieved through cover due to its snagless design. The basic buzzbait anatomy includes:

    • Multiple or single 2-winged prop that spin on the wire harness
    • A lead head that hides the connection between the wire harness and hook; in addition to adding weight allowing the buzzbait to run up right
    • A hook that is connected to the wire harness
    • A skirt to dress up the hook and camouflage it
    • A wire harness that holds all the components together

“I love to fish buzzbaits, but always had the issue of getting a good hook set so; I designed the Break Away Buzzbait. The Break Away Buzzbait has a collapsible wire arm connected to the wire harness that gets knocked away when a bass strikes it. This increases an anglers hook up ratio tremendously,” said Don Minkler, owner of E-Z Dip Lures (E-Z Dip Lure Company This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Other features of the Break Away Buzzbait include a long wire arm extending backwards along with a flat lead head that is angled to ride better and higher in the water column. “Break Away Buzzbaits can catch bass in shallow water, clear deep water, in cover, around cover, or out away from the bank,” Minkler continued, “an angler can cast them early in the morning, during the day, or in the evening and catch fish on almost any lake or stream. It’s also the perfect lure for a novice since all they have to do is just reel it in and set the hook when the bass strikes it. The key to catching bass on a buzzbait is to wait until you feel the weight of the fish on your line before setting the hook.” The Break Away Buzzbait comes in either a clacker model or regular buzzbait model without a clacker. The clacker model has only one prop, but includes a blade that makes a clacking noise every time it hits the prop. The regular model buzzbait comes with 2 props that make a v-wake when retrieved back in. Both Break Away Buzzbaits come in either a 3/8-ounce or 1/2-ounce model. Break Away Buzzbaits are available in white, black, shad, and chartreuses/white.

Although buzzbaits are commonly labeled a summertime lure to be fished only in the morning or in the late evening that’s really a misconception among anglers. Buzzbaits can be fished almost year round and anytime bass are in shallow water. One trick anglers use buzzbaits for is to locate spawning bass. Even though these spawning bass don’t typically get hooked on the buzzbait reeled over top of their beds, it indicates where the bed is without spooking the bass so anglers can cast other lures into it to catch them. Buzzbaits are also commonly thrown all day for smallmouth in streams drawing vicious strikes from shallow bass.

It’s no secret that buzzbaits catch lots of fish and big ones. The only secret is that the Break Away Buzzbait will increase the number of hookups that you have when a bass strikes.
