Sexy Spoon Fishing With Professional Angler Mark Rose

I give up! I mean, what else can I say about the Strike King Sexy Spoon that already has not been written. I love the articles that cleverly play on the word sexy. You know the ones. Do you really think that a slightly, curved piece of metal is sexy, tantalizing, lifelike, seductive, curvaceous, or large and in charge? No way! The Strike King Sexy Spoon is simply a spoon designed especially for catching fish when they are located on off shore structure. No one professional angler has profited more by using the Sexy Spoon in bass tournaments than Mark Rose from Marion, Arkansas. Truth be told, part of the resurgence in the popularity of big spoons can be directly related to Rose’s success in bass tournaments. Rose’s technique for how and when to fish big spoons is anything but sexy; however, the results can be very exciting.
For Rose, being successful with the Sexy Spoon is knowing when to fish with it. He prefers to fish it in the late spring to early fall. That is the best time to fish a big spoon. Unlike jigging or slab spoons that are fish vertically in the winter months, the Sexy Spoon is
made to be fished horizontally and for targeting off shore structure. “The Sexy Spoon doesn’t flutter like a jigging spoon, but cradles back and forth downward after it is pulled up off the bottom; this gives the Sexy Spoon lots of action and vibration.” Rose continued, “To fish a spoon right, make a long cast and let it fall to the bottom then make one long pull to get it off the bottom, like you were fishing a big 10-inch worm only make one pull then let it cradle back down. The bite on a Sexy Spoon happens when the spoon is falling backwards, most of the hits a fish will nail it. The key is to let the spoon fall on a slack line letting the spoon cradle back down; in fact that is the problem most anglers have when fishing a spoon, they do not let it fall on a slack line.”
Rose starts using a big spoon in the spring after the shad go deep. He fishes groups of bass that have moved to ambush points like humps, muscle beds, ledges, and other off shore ambush points. “I will fish the Sexy Spoon anywhere I would fish a deep diving crankbait or a football head jig.” When fishing the 5 ½-inch Sexy Spoon, Rose will target depths of 10- to 25-feet deep. On the other hand, when Rose is fishing the smaller 4-inch Sexy Spoon he will be fishing in 8- to 12-feet deep and bass are feeding on smaller shad in shallower water. As for color, Rose likes to keep it simple. “I use the Sexy Shad color most of the time, but I will also use Chartreuse on cloudy days and Gold/Black Back in water that is stained or tannic,” said Rose.
Rose uses a long non-telescopic 7’6” Kistler Helium HE76HC rod when fishing a spoon. “The length of the rod is important to make long casts and also to set the hook; an angler only has a small window of opportunity to set the hook before a bass will reject it,” explained Rose. As for line, he uses 20-pound Seagaur InvizX fluorocarbon line. “Fluorocarbon fishing line allows me to feel the strikes and get better hook set, especially when the spoon is way out there,” said Rose. The reel Rose uses is a high speed 7.1:1 Shamino Chronarch.
For professional angler Mark Rose, the Sexy Spoon is a must have lure when fishing off shore structure and ambush points like on Kentucky Lake or Lake Pickwick. Does he think it’s a sexy lure? Probably not, but he knows that big spoons catch quality fish that can win tournaments and for Rose, that makes this slightly, curved piece of metal tantalizing, lifelike, seductive, curvaceous, and downright… sexy.
