I just got back from competing in the FLW National Guard College fishing tournament at Lake of the Ozarks. The Lake had a lot of fishing pressure with the Stren Series and the Big Bass Bash being held over the weekend. The fishing was pretty tough. and we could catch them on a variety of baits but they were mostly small. Working our way back in the creek, we found that the fish were really relating to the channel swing points. Whenever we would pull up on a set of docks or a point with the channel hitting it we would start getting bit. During practice it seemed like the keeper fish liked a spinnerbait over anything else. We had what appeared to be a couple of nice fish come off of docks and swirl on our spinnerbaits. As our practice day was coming to a close it started to rain and it would continue to rain the entire night.
One of the hottest techniques across the tournament trail is wacky jig fishing. The technique has been more of a sleeper than other popular finesse fishing techniques but one thing is certain if you haven't tried this rig you need to because it will put more bass into your boat now!
This past weekend we kicked off the College Fishing season with Placing 5th out of 40 teams at the National Guard College Fishing Regional Qualifier at Bull Shoals Lake. The finish earned our Bass Club 1,000 dollars and our school another 1,000 as well as a birth to the National Guard College Fishing Regional Championship. We only weighed in two keepers that edged out the 6th place team by .01lbs. I don’t know whether to say that we were lucky or unlucky because our motor blew up after just 2 and a half hours of fishing which left us unable to run our pattern. I believe that we could have caught a couple more keepers if we had gotten to fish another 3 hours. We spent the last 3 hours of the day getting towed back to K Dock Marina. I am almost certain we could have won the tournament.
