Bass Fishing Techniques: Sight Fishing with Professional Angler Chad Pipkens
Do you come from a land down under? Where largemouth and smallmouth swim… and grow larger? For Chad Pipkens from Holt, Michigan, the answer would be, “Yes, I come from the land down under, where the bass I catch are so much larger; other anglers better run, hide, and take cover.”

No angler has taken to the land down under more than 26 year old, FLW competitor Chad Pipkens. Pipkens, an inspiring professional angler just keeps looking down-not at his fellow anglers but fish. You see Pipkens has taken to using a Flogger sold by Lure Craft (www.lurecraft.com) to locate and catch bass while pre-fishing and in tournaments. “I basically sit in the driver’s seat with no electric cords, cables, or sunglasses to see the bass,” Pipkens continued, “it’s like looking through a divers mask underwater.” In fact, before Pipkens had a Flogger, he used a diver’s mask to look for spawning bass, cover, and structure. “On calm, sunny days it’s easy to look for spawning bass, but when the wind comes up, you are fishing blind for these spawning bass, that’s where you can benefit by using a Flogger,” explained Pipkens. Pipkens fishes mostly northern waters where the visibility is extremely clear for both spawning largemouth and smallmouth.
Key to sight fishing: Keep the sun to your back, good sunglasses, and pray for calm, sunny weather if you do not have a Flogger.
